Social media for society

Social media allows individuals to gather and express themselves in a much more simple and immediate fashion. They give the opportunity to gain publicity, express their opinions, exchange views.

One of the main tasks use of social media in society are that we can connect all over the world to that far away family or friends and see what is happening in their life. By making a post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by making their own blog on  website we make contact, share what we do.

A very important point is to control the internet by the police. By controlling the police can not only receive signals about the terrorist attacks, but also through the human stupidity, get evidence of robbery or theft. People really like to boast on YouTube or Facebook their exploits.

The Societal Issues Raised by Social Media

Social Media's have a huge impact in to society and it becomes even stronger over the time as even older people start to use them.

Ø  As a forum for support and safety information during a crisis

Few times in the past have been disasters when using the social media was the only way for people to communicate with family and friend to say that they were OK. During Boston Marathon bombing police were asking people to use social media to communicate as they tried to keep phone lines available for those in need of help.

Ø  As a valuable aid for crime-solving

Many police departments check Social Media platforms to search for potential crime activities. Posting videos of drink and drive will have result for you to been tracked and arrested under those circumstances.

Ø  As a form of political influence

Social media is a powerful force to make or change people political decision. The way of people engagement in politic is changing this days and political party making posts on social media can bring more positive respond than advertising only on radio or TV.

Ø  As the best-yet way to connect across vast distances

Social Media gave us a great opportunity to have a contact with family and friend that live long distances from us. Sending your mail by post took few days or weeks to arrive but today in just one click you can have a live conversation or using Skype direct connection with someone on the other side of the globe. You can share photos and check how they are when you cannot physically be there.

Ø  As brand engagement

Social Media have completely transformed advertisement and marketing industry. It gives the power to the companies to have a direct and personal connection with the customers and by sales proposals directly to individuals. Many companies just discover the internet customer service and that just becoming as standard practice. They can make their products more popular as people who like it are more likely to share that with friends so the customer net expands

Potential Dangers of Social Media to Individuals Including Personal Safety

Most children and young people use the social media the right way. However, sometimes they behave in ways that may place them at risk. Some risks do not necessarily arise from the technology itself but as a result from offline behaviours that are extended into the online world, and vice versa.

Ø  Potential risks can include, but are not limited to:

Ø  Bullying by people they call ‘friends’ on media platform

Ø  Posting personal information that can identify and locate a child offline

Ø  Sexual grooming, attracting and abuse contact with strangers

Ø  Contact with inappropriate content

Ø  Exposure to racist or hate material

Ø  Encouragement of violent behaviour

Ø  Glorifying activities such as drug taking or excessive drinking

Ø  Physical harm to young people in making video content, such as imitating stunts and risk taking activities

Ø  Leaving and running away from home as a result of contacts made online.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR YOU TO BE SAFER A BIT
WHEN USING SOCIAL MEDIA:

NEVER SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATIONS

That can save you from identity theft and even protect your physical safety. Never share your social security number (including last 4 digits), your birth date, home address or home phone. You should protect all of your passwords, PIN numbers, bank account and credit card information.

But I advise you to never share the state where you were born as this information can be used to obtain your social security number and other identity information. Facebook, for example, allows you to restrict who can see your birthday or place you were born. But not every site has these options. In those cases avoid the problem altogether by not entering information you don’t want to share.

CUSTOMIZE PRIVACY OPTIONS

You have a control to set your own privacy settings. Don’t use default settings the site gives you. Check out the settings, configuration and privacy sections to see what options you have to limit who can see numerous aspects of your personal information. Facebook probably has some of the broadest privacy options, giving you control where no one, friends, friends and networks, or everyone can see basic info, personal info, photos, friends and postings.

BE SUSPICIOS – DON’T TRUST EVERYONE

There are many fake accounts on social media that some people use just for fun but many of them are used to get as many information they can to use it against you.

DON’T STATE YOUR PLANS

You wouldn’t put a note on your front door stating, “Won’t be home for the weekend… Back on Monday.”

GOOD PRATCICE TO “GOOGLE” YOURSELF

Type in your name in Google search engine to see what information’s are available for everyone to see and to check if there are not any fake profiles on social media platforms acting in your name and using your details

DON’T BRAKE YOUR’S COMPANY SOCIAL NETWORKING POLICY

Make sure you never share any information that are related to your work place including confidential or customer information. Don’t make any inappropriate comments about your company or your work colleagues as that may result in reprimand or dismissal

CHECK HOW SITES OR MEDIA PLATFORMS CAN USE YOR INFORMATION

As social networks are mostly free they make money by running advertising to you and that’s why they collect all the information about you.

Social production, social intelligence and social capital

Social production is a collaboration large number of people in a coordinated manner, often without knowing it. This usually happens via the Internet.
For example, going to the concert hundreds of people to record movies and then made available on you tube. They can then watch thousands of other people who were not at the concert.
A good example is Wikipedia where thousands of people work on creating an encyclopedia of knowledge.

Social intelligence first time was defined by Edward Thorndike in 1920, meaning the ability to understand and manage people and intelligent action in human relations.
It involves the selection of appropriate behavior and way of communication between people, which is difficult in situations involving negative emotions. It is not only achieve the purpose for which communication is a means, but especially the extent to which the recipient of the message does not distort the intentions of the sender. It is therefore also the ability to deal with interpersonal conflicts and ease interaction with others.
It affects our social skills, comprising the ability of self-control, self-creation and insight into their own emotions.

In the 70s of the twentieth century social capital term was introduced by Pierre Bourdieu, and then spread in by James Coleman. Both have two different ways of understanding and defining this concept.
It is a term used to describe the capital of organized society as part of the process of production and life. Its value is based on mutual social relationships and trust units that thanks to it, you can achieve more benefits from an economic and social point of view.
These are the ties that rely on a sense of their own identity. They may be friends, family or distant friends, colleagues and associates.
